It depends on what the noise is doing to the source, how much processing is coming later, and whether removal will cost you more than the noise itself.

When should you denoise audio in a real workflow?

Denoising is best treated as a problem-solving move, not a default step. If the noise is distracting, stacking up across tracks, triggering downstream processors, or making edits feel obvious, deal with it. Wait to denoise when the context might solve it

Some noise problems disappear once the full arrangement is playing. A faint headphone leak under a loud snare close mic might be irrelevant. A touch of room tone on an indie vocal may actually help continuity between edits. A guitar amp hiss that feels obvious in solo can vanish under drums and bass.

The type of noise should guide the timing

Not all noise behaves the same way. Broad, constant noise like hiss, AC noise, or laptop fan wash is usually well suited for traditional denoising because it has a stable profile. Intermittent problems like clicks, mouth noise, bumps, chair creaks, or headphone bleed often need targeted repair instead.

Hum and buzz are another category. If the issue is electrical at 50 or 60 Hz and harmonics, a de-hum tool or surgical EQ may do less damage than broadband denoising.
